Our ‘Pupil’s Council’ are organising our annual ‘Cake Sale’ which will be held this Thursday 31st of May. All parents are welcome to attend for tea and a treat between 11am and 12:30pm. We kindly ask if all families could donate some baked or bought items. Please label all boxes/tins clearly for return.
Discover Primary Science Award of Excellence
Congratulations to children and staff of Dromore for once again receiving the prestigious award of Excellence in Science and Maths. All year every class have been experimenting, investigating, observing and exploring. A special thank you to Ms. Doherty for collating all the evidence and applying for the award on behalf of the school.
Our annual Sports Day will take place on Wednesday 13th of June (weather permitting). We look forward to seeing many of you there.
First Holy Communion

On Wednesday the 30th we will hold a whole school dance in aid of ‘Relay for Life’. All families are asked to donate 1 euro to this very worthy cause. Keep an eye on our school facebook for a video of the event.

Cumann ns mBunscol
Well done to Caolan Duffy, Colm Coyle and Eimear Ewing who were picked to play for the Donegal Cumann na mBunscol school teams for both hurling and gaelic. They represented our school so well and we were very proud of them.
Finn Valley County Finals
Well done to all our boys and girls who took part in the Finn Valley Sports County Finals. Many our pupils represented the school and we are very proud of them both for their good behaviour up at the sports and of their achievements in the track and field events. We came home with lots of medals , which is brilliant at this level. Thanks to our coach Dermot, Ms. Mc Elchar and everyone who helped out over the two days of the Finn Valley Sports. It was a great experience for all involved.
Finn Harps Frans Field Cup
Well done to our boys and girls teams who took part in the Finn Harps Fran Fields Cup at the sunny Harps Academy. Our boys made home advantage count and were victorious in this great football tournament. They won all 5 of their matches and didn't concede a single goal, fantastic achievement. The team played some brilliant football and displayed super skills throughout the day. The boys team were: Oisín Duffy (c), Oisín Coyle, Conor Galvin, Bryan Irwin, Cathaír Browne, Caolán Duffy and Conor Gallen. Our girls team were unlucky not to get through the group stages, drawing two matches and losing just one. The children represented our school well and were commended on their good behaviour.

April Newsletter 2018
We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded our 8th Green Flag! This is a wonderful achievment that we are very proud of. A special thanks to Ms. Byrne, the Green Team and all the staff for all the hard work involved.
We celebrated ‘Active Week’ in style in Dromore this year. We held daily PE lessons, Drop Everything and Dance, WOW day, Teddy Races, 10 @ 10, a whole school dance and we launched our 1k route. Thanks to Ms. Mc Elchar, the Blue team and all the staff for all the effort in making it a great success. This will all help as we prepare to apply for our third ‘Active Flag’ at the end of the month..
First Holy Communion
Second class will receive the Sacrament of Communion on Saturday the 12th of May. We wish them the very best on their special day.
Drama in Action
Second, third and fourth class began an eight week block of 'Drama in Action' which is run in connection with the Balor Arts Centre. The facilitators are Katie Bradley and Shaun Lafferty. The children are taking part in a variety of drama workshops exploring the various elements of drama such as exploring and making drama and communicating and reflecting in drama. A great opportunity for developing confidence and creativity in our pupils.
Sixth class have been working hard to produce our school magazine- ‘Dromore Talk’. We are very grateful to all local business’ who have sponsored the magazine and we look forward to seeing the final product in the coming weeks.
We are happy to be offering swimming lessons in the Finn Valley Centre to third class. The school is funding the lessons as we feel this is a wonderful opportunity for our children.
Garda Brenda Healy visited sixth class on the 11th of April. The children were very interested and had lots of questions regarding the job and life as a member of the Garda Síochána. It proved to be a very worthwhile visit, reminding us all of the important role the Garda Síochána play in our community.
School Garden and Farm Project
Ms. O’Shea Byrne and our pupils have been working hard developing our school garden and looking after our hens. A special thanks to Dean Gillespie for providing us with a polytunnel to ensure that we will have plenty of fresh produce in the coming weeks! We would also like to sincerely thank Seamus Donaghey for giving his time to help upgrade our hen house.
Finn Valley Trials
All children from first to sixth class had a great time at the CAKE centre taking part in the trials for the upcoming Finn Valley Athletics Competition which will be held on Wednesday the 9th of May. Thanks to our athletics coach Dermot for helping to organise the event.
Croke Park Trials
Well done to Eiméar Ewing, Colm Coyle, Caolan Duffy and Ellie Rigby who are representing the school at the Cumann na mBunscol Hurling and Gaelic Croke Park trials. Well done on getting picked to take part in this competition. We are very proud of you all.
We would like to remind all parents that school begins at 9.20am. Please continue to ensure that your child arrives to school on time.

March has been a busy month in Dromore!
A sincere thanks to all who contributed to our recent Easter Draw. All monies raised go towards school funds. World Book Day
On Friday 9th of March we celebrated World Book Day in style. A special thanks to all who helped prepare the children with their wonderful costumes.
Children from third to sixth class thoroughly enjoyed the Lego Workshops as part of Engineer’s Week.
Third class hosted a fantastic Science fair for all classes on the 6th of March. It was a very enjoyable learning experience for everyone! Well done third class.
Explaining the Diagnosis
A special thanks to Ms. B Walters who facilitated an excellent presentation on ‘Explaining the Diagnosis to your Child’. Great feedback was given from the parents who attended.
Parents Information Evening
The Parent’s Association have re- arranged the open evening for parents on Monday 16th of April at 8pm with a talk from Bill Vaughan about ‘Well-being and Mental Health’. He gives an excellent presentation on a very relevant topic at present. We hope to see many of you there.
Training Courses for parents
In conjunction with Middletown Centre of Excellence for Autism we are offering 6 training workshops for parents during the months of April and May on various dates from 11am- 1pm. The FAI Schools Cup took place at The Curragh Athletic pitch in Killygordon. We had a boys and girls team playing in this tournament. Our boys team made it out of a tough group of 6 teams, winning four games and drawing one, playing some fantastic football along the way. They made it to the semi-finals but unfortunately didn't progress to the final. The boys can be very proud of reaching this far in the competition and were just unlucky on the day. Our girls team enjoyed four matches in their group and played well but unfortunately they didn't get out of their group. Well done to everyone who took part today and despite the cold weather, a great day was had by all.

February 2018 Newsletter
We are delighted to have recently installed 26 new pc computers in our computer suite. All classes have been timetabled to use them and will have many opportunities to develop their I.T. skills.
On the 6th of February we welcomed over 40 grandparents to our school. This was a lovely occasion where the 5th class children had the opportunity to show their grandparents what life in Dromore is like. There were lots of activities, songs and poems on the day and everyone appeared to have a wonderful afternoon. A special thanks to Ms. Reynolds, Ms. Byrne and all who helped to make Grandparents’ Day a great success.
The AGM of the Parents Association was held on Wednesday 21st of February. The new committee elected are: Pauline Curran – Chairperson, Diane Gallagher- Vice Chairperson, Breege Duffy- Secretary, Pauline Cannon-Vice Secretary, Jason Ewing-Treasurer, Dean Gillespie- Assistant Treasurer.
A special thanks to Eva Brown the Twin Towns librarian who visited the school and hosted some workshops for Junior and Senior Infants. We encourage all families to use the library facility which is located at The Base Centre in Stranorlar.
World Book Day
World Book Day is celebrated on Thursday the 1st of March. As part of this the children are allowed to dress as their favourite character from a book. Lots of different activities will take place in school on this day.
Explaining the Diagnosis
Following on from interest expressed at previous meetings we will host a session on Wednesday the 7th of March at 7pm on ‘Explaining the diagnosis of Autism to your Child’. This will be facilitated by Ms. Belinda Walters and all are welcome to attend.
Thank you to Mr. Gillespie and his helpers for making delicious pancakes for everyone on Tuesday 13th of February.
Music and Drama in Action
Between February and April, Junior Infants to First class are fortunate to be taking part in Music in Action facilitated by the Balor theatre. Second class to fourth class will take part in Drama in Action from April to June. A great opportunity for these classes to develop their confidence and creativity in these areas.
Gaelic Football Blitz
Well done to our boys and girls Gaelic Football teams for taking part in a blitz in Mac Cumhaill Park. Congratulations to our boys team who were victorious on the day beating Dooish NS and Scoil Bhríde Convoy. They played some brilliant football on the day and now progress to the next round. Hurling and Camogie Blitz
Well done to our boys and girls hurling and camogie teams who took part in a blitz at the Finn Valley Centre. Our boys were unlucky not to progress to the next round as they beat both Stranorlar NS and Sessiaghoneill NS but lost out to the Gaelscol Donegal Town. Congratulations to our girls team for winning all their matches and now progress to the County Finals (date to be confirmed). Representing Dromore: Ellie Rigby, Ellie Murray, Eimear Ewing, Sasha Crawford, Mollie Mc Kelvey, Ciara Moss, Eabha Mc Laughlin, Ben Linton, Caolan Duffy, Luke Holmes, Conor Gallagher and Colm Coyle.
Whilst we have an open door policy in Dromore and welcome parents to our school it is very important for Health and Safety reasons that all parents wait at reception when collecting their child or meeting their child’s teacher.

January 2018 Newsletter
It is hard to believe that January is over! We have had a a great start to the new year with lots of activities and events taking place in Dromore.
Our enrolment will take place on Wednesday 14th of February from 1-3pm. If you wish to enrol your child please bring your child’s birth certificate, baptisimal certificate and any other relevant documentation. We look forward to meeting some of our new pupils on the day also.
We have launched our new school website which aims to provide up to date information about our school. School policies are also available for parents on the website e.g Child Protection policy, Anti- bullying policy etc. The page can be accessed at www.dromorenationalschool.com
Friendship week/Antibullying Week
From the 5th to the 9th of February we will celebrate Friendship/Anti bullying week. All classes will take part in lessons and activities based on this area. On Friday the 9th we will have an ‘Odd Sock Day’ to celebrate the idea ‘All different, all equal’.
School Self Evaluation
Thanks to all the parents who took the time to return our questionnaire for school self evaluation. We appreciate all the feedback and are delighted that so many of you appear happy with literacy in our school. We are taking all of your suggestions on board and will implement some of your very valid ideas. We are also intending to hold an information session about ‘How to read with your child’ after Easter for parents of children from junior infants to second class. Date to be confirmed.
Well done to all the children who represented the school in handball on the 25th of January. Four schools took part in the Cumann na mBunscoil Handball tournament in Mac Cumhaills GAA Handball Alley. Dromore, Sessiaghoneill, Richfield and Downings took part in what was an exciting and enjoyable day of handball. Seven of our children qualified for the County Final. The children from Dromore were commended on their good behaviour and did the school proud. Good luck in the finals!
On Tuesday 6th of February 5th class will celebrate Grandparents Day as part of Catholic Schools Week.
Curriculum Language Training
School will be closed for children on Thursday 8th of February to facilitate training for teachers in the ‘New Language Curriculum’.
As part of our ‘Active Schools’ award, all classes have been participating in ‘10@10’. Ten minutes of exercises every day at 10 o’clock. This is in conjunction with the ‘Operation Transformation’ programme. What an active bunch we have in Dromore!

December Newsletter 2017
As the year draws to a close we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year. We extend a special thanks to all of you for your continuued support in ensuring that Dromore continues to grow from strength to strength.
Thank you to all families who supported our Christmas Draw. Once again, it was a great success and all funds will support our new computer suite. Winners were- Paddy Brogan, Catherine Dullaghan, Evan O’Connor, Conan Mc Hugh, Daniel Callaghan, Selina Bonner, Niamh Mc Grory, Ellie Murray, Emmett Mc Cafferty, Patsy Doherty, Declan Dooher and Eve Devine.
We are delighted with the success of every classes performances during our Christmas concerts this year. We are very proud of all the children for all the hard work, singing, dancing and acting skills.
Laps to Lapland
Dromore took on the 'Laps to Lapland' challenge this Christmas. Our Active School Committee came up with this idea as a great way of keeping fit over Christmas at school. The distance from Donegal to Lapland is over 4049km so all the boys and girls and staff had to complete 4049 laps of our basketball court (1k=1 lap). What an active bunch we are!
The school will have a half day closure on the 24th of January to facilitiate staff training in ‘Child Protection’. Children will be going home at 12 o’clock. On the 8th of February the school will be closed for the full day to faciliate training for the ‘New Language Curriculum’.
The Dromore N.S. Choir sang in the chapel on Sunday the 17th of December along with other local schools for a Carol Service. It was a joyful and festive night. A special thanks to Michael Bradley who prepared the children for the event.
We welcomed back Noah’s Ark puppet show on Thursday 14th of December. The children really enjoyed it and learned all about the true meaning of Christmas.
All children form third to sixth class made their confessions with Fr. Lynch on Monday 18th of December.
On the 2nd of December, over 40 children represented Dromore in the ‘Sportshall Athletics’ in the Finn Valley Centre. Everyone put in 100% effort and we are very proud of their efforts.
Internet Safety Training
The Donegal Youth Service will be in the school on the 15th of January to give a talk to children from third class upwards on internet safety and cyber bullying. That evening there will be an information session for parents on the same topics. Time to be confirmed. We hope to see many of you there as it is such an important area in your children’s lives.
